“Then came the fly rod.... oh the frustrations. Just when I thought I had it all figured out. Let me tell you, catching a "unicorn" on the swing was a daunting task. If it wasn't for the river being so peaceful, I would have lost it like Clark Griswold in "Christmas Vacation" trying to figure out his christmas lights( go to 2:55 in this youtube clip for reference if you have never seen this scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp8lwpvQEIM ). “
After a whirlwind two and a half weeks opening the store and planning a demo day/ fundraiser, I finally have time to sit down and write a blog... this feels good. I am always amazed how things just seem come together in their own time and way.
Being a go-getter I seem to bite off more than I think I can chew. For instance: lets open a fly shop in under 3 months.... lets have a fundraiser with only two weeks to plan... I am here to tell you this is the kind of thing that gives a person grey hairs.
Lets start with opening weekend. Justin, Stacy, myself, and a few other friends were what you call "pinned" for a week leading up to the opening, Inventory was just finishing trickling through the door, and the walls were empty until 3 days before opening. This seems fairly standard but you have to keep in mind none of us have a ton of retail experience let alone have the slightest clue how to use an inventory system or point of sales system..... if you wondering this is a recipe for chaos! I would liken it to a person walking into a fishing hole on the river with nothing but a swiss army knife, having to carve their own fly rod and try to catch a fish on a dry fly in the middle of winter... Needless to say with a great bunch of friends and family and a lot of luck we opened the doors to the shop on the 15th of April. Its a good thing that our clients are all people that fish and understand the skill of patience as the first day was for lack of better words "a gong show"!
On to the Demo day portion of the story, bit of a roller coaster of emotions here. So once the doors were open I had this brilliant idea of planning a demo day/fundraiser in just under two weeks... Our friends from Loop Tackle, CF Burkheimer, Echo, Airflo, Rio, RedL Sports, Fly angler, Peetz Outdoors, Swift fly fishing, Quality Foods and many more( yes that was a big shout out I know) all came together literally some down to the last morning to get us demo rods, prizes, food and much more! One of my friends Evan literally rode the black ball ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles to pick up the fleet of Burkheimer demo rods the day before.... totally worth it. If you have not casted a Burkheimer rod you have not lived...so good. Mother nature even was on our side it was a beautiful sunny day, the smell of bbq in the air the methodic sound of fly lines peeling off the water and gently (some not so gently *cough cough Yari cough cough) touching down on the glass calm lake. Fishing stories were being told and expert instruction handed out by Shawn Willard Brown and Ryan White among others. All in all everyone had an exceptional day and we could not be happier with the turn out and the new friends we made!
To cap this one off I just wanted to personally once again thank everyone who has helped us get through the first two weeks of business. Without the support of our family, friends and community we could not have pulled this off. Our first couple weeks has been amazing and I know that we are going to be here to stay. I wake up every day excited to meet new faces and exchange fishing stories and help people better their skills whether its personal advice or pointing people in the right direction or connecting two people who would not have crossed paths otherwise. Bringing the community together through the sport of fly fishing is an amazing thing. Looking forward to meeting many more in the near future!
Stay tuned for future events!
